Testimonial from previous internships by Caroline Barringer:
"I just completed a week long internship with Caroline Barringer, an NTA instructor, and I thought I'd share a little of my experience for anyone who might be interested in taking an internship in the future. First let me just say that I think the idea to make internships more available to NTA grads is extremely important. While our classroom experience prepares us as well, to work with an actual practicing NTP in an office setting is vital, especially those like myself with no prior background or experience in a clinical setting.
So here's how the week was structured: We met from Monday to Friday from 10am-6pm at Caroline's office. The first day we spent entirely on business. I can't even begin to explain the value of this information. We learned about the various steps needed to establish a business entity, everything from getting insurance and a tax ID # to deciding on various business structures like LLCs or DBAs. We learned various options for advertising like placing ads, running promotions and attending health fairs to name just a few. We learned about website development and all the different online options to choose from and finally we learned about maintenance and management skills that keep your business running smoothly such as organization of files, taxes and bookkeeping. As someone with no business background this was enormously helpful. It gave me a solid grasp on where to begin and how to get things going.
The next 4 days were all relevant to working with clients. On Tuesday we worked solely on each other to prepare us for the actual clients we'd be seeing from Wed-Fri. We went over the entire consultation process. We also went over things like preparing an invoice, handing out client recommendation forms, dosing, ordering supplements, using our reference guides and organizing paperwork. This greatly prepared us for the next 3 days.
Before the actual consultations on Wed.-Fri. we reviewed the clients' paperwork. Caroline has a great system whereby she requires all her clients to hand in their paperwork at least 48 hours before the actual consultation. This gives time to review the clients' information, jot down some ideas, etc., and be prepared as much as possible beforehand. On Wed. Caroline performed the first consultation with myself and the other intern observing. This was great just to see how she worked, made us more comfortable when we performed the consultations ourselves and allowed us to ask questions throughout the process. On Thursday and Friday we then performed the consultations with Caroline shadowing us and providing guidance and suggestions throughout.
I know that Caroline will be offering more internships in the future and I couldn't possibly recommend a better out of classroom experience. I highly recommend this particular internship with Caroline to any NTA grad but also hope that more like it will be offered around the country to help NTPs further refine and develop their practices. I don't know what else to say other than it was truly a priceless experience."
